   1 On behalf of the beta-testers and other members of the Linux INTERNET
   2 community who have helped shape and debug this package I am pleased to
   3 announce version 1.3-pl3 of the sysklogd package.

   5 This package implements two system log daemons. The syslogd daemon is
   6 an enhanced version of the standard Berkeley utility program. This
   7 daemon is responsible for providing logging of messages received from
   8 programs and facilities on the local host as well as from remote
   9 hosts. The klogd daemon listens to kernel message sources and is
  10 responsible for prioritizing and processing operating system
  11 messages. The klogd daemon can run as a client of syslogd or
  12 optionally as a standalone program.

  14 This package is the culmination of about two years of experience and
  15 bug reports on the 1.2 version from both the INTERNET and our
  16 corporate Linux networks. The utilities in this package should provide
  17 VERY reliable system logging. Klogd and syslogd have both been stress
  18 tested in kernel development environments where literally hundreds of
  19 megabytes of kernel messages have been blasted through them. If either
  20 utility should fail I would appreciate a report and debug information
  21 so that the bug can be reproduced and squashed.

  23 This package includes some major improvements. Some of them are listed

  26         * klogd supports on-the-fly kernel address to symbol
  27         translations. This requires that a valid kernel symbol map be
  28         found at execution.

  30         * klogd also supports debugging of protection faults which occur
  31         in kernel loadable modules.

  33         * syslogd has better handling of remote logging capabilities.

  35         * both klogd and syslogd can be controlled through commandline
  36         options and signals.

  40         * a syslog.conf(5) manpage is now available.

  42         * Spaces are now accepted in the syslog configuration
  43         file. This should be a real crowd pleaser.

  45         * Syslogd now uses dynamic allocation of logging output
  46         descriptors. There is no longer a static limit on the number
  47         of log destinations that can be defined.
